Impetigo is a bacterial skin infection that causes red sores that can break open, ooze fluid and develop a yellowish-brown crust anywhere on the body however most often they appear around the mouth or nose. Bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus infect the outer layers of skin, called the epidermis. The sores formed are generally not painful, but may be itchy. Impetigo is most common in children. It is contagious and can spread to others through close contact or by sharing towels, sheets, toys or clothing.
