A cyst is a closed sac that contains a "pasty" or "cheesy" substance that often has a foul smelling odor. It commonly appears on the scalp, face, ears, back or groin area. Cysts are non cancerous harmless, slow-growing bumps under the skin. Occasionally, secondary infections may lead to pain and swelling of the lesion. Symptoms that may indicate infection includes: redness, pain, warmth, increase in size and grayish white foul smelling material draining from the lesion.
Treatment Options:
Warm compresses may help. Secondary infection may require incision and drainage, followed by a course of antibiotics. Sebaceous cyst requires complete removal otherwise recurrence is common.
