Shingles, or herpes zoster, occurs due to the reactivation of varicella zoster virus. Adults above 50 years are at an increased risk for developing herpes zoster, probably due to the immunosenescence associated with advancing age, but it can affect individuals of any age, especially those with a suppressed cell-mediated immunity due to any disease or drugs. It results in a painful rash of small blisters on one side of the body. The rash is unlikely to last longer than 3 weeks, pain can continue long after the shingles rash heals. This long-lasting pain, called PHN (post herpetic neuralgia), can stay for about 3 to 6 months.
Treatment Options:
While there is no cure for Shingles, an antiviral medication may help get well sooner and feel less pain. Oral Pain killers helps with post herpetic neuralgia.
