Dry skin is a very common skin condition, usually characterized by irritated skin, itchiness and cracking of skin. Dry skin often worsens in the winter, when the air is cold and dry. Treatment is important because extensively dry skin can lead to dermatitis (asteototic eczema) which is inflammation of the skin. Dry skin can be caused by environmental factors, harsh soap/detergents which strip away fatty oils, leaving your skin unprotected. Less often the cause is internal or genetic.
Treatment Options:
Limiting bath/showers to 5-10 minutes and using lukewarm water is recommended. Use moisturising soap or shower gel instead of harsh scrubs and soaps. Apply a moisturising cream immediately after bath.
