Few topical creams, especially the ones used for hyperpigmentary disorders and contact dermatitis which are available at most of the medical stores with or without a prescription, are most popular and are misused by dark skinned individuals for fairness.
Most creams sold in the market for hyperpigmentary disorders, contain cocktail of compounds like steroids, hydroquinone, and tretinoin; the long term use of which can lead to dangerous health concerns especially when used by a normal individual.
Side effects may include:
  • Redness
  • Thinning of skin
  • Hypopigmentation
  • Increased facial hair growth
  • Pigmented lesions (exogenous ochronosis)
  • Steroid rosacea
  • Acne
  • Fungal infections
  • Perioral dermatitis
  • Striae
  • Sunburns
  • Steroid addiction
  • Skin cancer

How to prevent abuse?
  1. Steroid containing creams must be used only if directed by your dermatologist for a skin disorder.
  2. You may approach your dermatologist for any issues including fairness.
  3. If fairness is the main issue, your dermatologist may discuss about sunprotection, chemical peeling, or suggest safer & mild topical skin lightening agents (facewash, cream, lotion) depending upon your skin type.
